How should a 17 month old leopard gecko be fed exactly and what do you feed yours?
Answers:
leopard geckos can be fed a variety of insects, but most people feed crickets and mealworms to their leopards. With mine, I place three to four crickets in their enclosure daily and let them hunt them down. If they devour all of these I will throw in a couple extra. Make sure that any insects (mealworms dont count as they cannot harm your gecko) that your gecko doesnt eat within an hour are taken out as crickets have been known to chew on lizard toes when they get hungry. Leopard geckos should also get crickets dusted with a vitamin/calcium supplement about once a week. This can be purchased at Petsmart.
Leopard geckos in captivity typically do not have access to the selection and variety of feeder insects that they would in the wild.
Although leopard geckos do have small teeth, these teeth are not used for the degree of mastication that one sees in mammals for example. They usually end up swallowing their food whole, or at least in large pieces. This is one of the reasons why it is extremely important to choose the most appropriately sized prey item.
A diet consisting of a variety of vitamin/calcium dusted insects such as:
Crickets
Mealworms
Waxworms
A shallow water bowl should be provided and changed daily.
Adult leopard geckos should be fed 4-5 times per week.
Some juveniles can be fed twice daily during their growing period.
4-5 Gutloaded large crickets and/or mealworms every other day. She is 7 years old.
