I would say however many you feel comfortable with. If you're in doubt, it's probably too many.
Men can never have too many. Women on the other hand should have small ones limited to the naval area, breast, back side, and maybe ankle.
when you are having to cover up old ones with new ones in other words you run out of skin to all you haters out there LOVE YOURSELF!
As soon as you get one you are going to be addicted to it. So I advise that you keep them in inconspicuous places. You wouldn't want them on your forearms and neck where people can see them readily and judge you harshly. But underneath your clothes you can have a world of art. I know I do.

WOW! I didn't realize there were so many tat haters! It definitely depends on you, the way you dress, your career. I love tasteful tattoos! The only thing that looks trashy, in my opinion, is on the hands/fingers/face. I am a woman with a some what professional career and I have 4. They are hidden when I'm dressed so I'm not judged in the office :) Be free, you only live once!
